Swim
Event #1
Many people get into triathlons with little or no background in swimming. It is said that; if swimming was not a part of the triathlon, more people would be doing them. Hence, many triathletes believe it is the most difficult discipline of the three. However, swimming is by far the shortest leg of the triathlon, both in distance and in overall time. I believe that many triathletes just enter the water with the goal of surviving and then moving on to the bike event. My belief is, if you can become proficient in the swim you will have a solid advantage and be postured for a strong and successful race.
Bike
Event #2
The bike component of a triathlon makes up a considerable part of any triathlon, approximately 60% of the race regardless of the chosen distance. Therefore, it provides the best opportunity to make a significant impact within the race. It also provides the best opportunity to take on food and to rehydrate. In my opinion the bike discipline could be considered the easiest of the three disciplines. It is not only physical, but mechanical as well. A good triathlon bike can make a significant difference.
Run
Event #3
I consider the run the hardest discipline within a triathlon because you are already fatigued from the swim and the bike and due to the sheer physical impact, it has on your body. I believe that an above average run can secure a good overall race finish.
